Just as in humans, health issue come up in dogs as they age. Let's take a look at some top issues dogs face as they grow older.
First, bad breath occurs in a dog due to a constipated digestive system. Such a digestive system locks the putrefying toxic wastes in the body of the dog and the stench is emitted from the mouth. Bad breath occurs due to a diet consisting of dead, refined food having no raw, live food or fiber.
Just because a dog has a daily bowel movement does not mean that the dog is not constipated. All dogs suffer from constipation at some point of time in their life. There are very few exceptions to this rule. However, very few owners ever get to know that their dog is constipated. The best way to get rid of bad breath is to give the dog a mix of rosemary leaves and flowers or lemon juice and water or apple juice or raw honey and water. It is advisable to make the dog fast for a few days to get rid of the immediate problem. To prevent recurrence, make the dog fast for at least one day of the week. Feed it nothing but distilled water and raw honey on that day. Use lots of raw fruits and vegetables, yogurt and raw or slightly braised meat. These changes should solve the problem bad breath.
Aged dogs are found to face the problem of slow loss of hair due to ill health. To solve this problem, feed the dog a diet of raw meats, vegetables and fruits. Feed brewers' yeast, kelp, desiccated liver, raw corn, olive, peanut or safflower oil to provide the dog with unsaturated fatty acids. Bathe the balding areas with rosemary leaves, marigold flowers or daffodil leaves. You can try massaging castor oil or eucalyptus oil as well.
Unspayed female dogs often face the problem of breast tumors. These occur due to hormonal imbalances and changes. If the dog is facing the problem of toxemia and ill health, the chances of breast tumor increases. It may also be connected with the estrogen in the body. It is important to remember that a tumor is an attempt by the body to isolate a harmful condition. A tumor is usually benign in some of its areas and malignant in other areas. You must keep in mind that a biopsy can aggravate the malignant portion and cause the tumor to spread even more rapidly.
A tumor is a message from the body that something is not right. Simply removing the tumor is not the solution. You must focus on removing the tumor as well as the cause of the tumor. It is very essential to remove the toxicity. This can be done by enriching the diet with live, raw foods which will ensure the supply of vital enzymes to the body. You can also opt for enzyme therapy along with the raw foods. You can also use herbal therapies to rectify the problem.
The general theory about cancer is that it is caused by faulty protein metabolism. A shift to raw, live food diet will give the body the opportunity to rectify the fault. The shift will clean up the blood stream and this will enhance the overall health of the body.

As your dog grows older, he should be fed only a proper and well balanced diet. The importance of the quality of the diet increases as the dog grows older. Each and every degenerative disease that aged dogs suffer is the result of deficiency in nutrition and poor absorption of nutrition.
There is consensus amongst authorities that aged dogs require additional vitamins and mineral supplements. They should be given lesser quantity of higher quality food. As the owner of a dog, it is your duty to identify symptoms of degenerative disease and correlate them with non-fulfillment of the nutrition requirements of the dog. The dog has no concern about its nutritional requirements. It does not care whether they have been fulfilled or not. A young dog can manage the lacunae in his diet. However, as the dog grows older, the lacunae result in illnesses.
Most of the experts agree that there is essentially only one canine disease- toxemia. This condition refers to the presence of waste in the cells of the dog. The waste causes the cells to either malfunction or cease to function. This condition may be given different names. However, the disease is essentially the same. The dog suffers this disease only because we feed the wrong foods. We are responsible for the presence of this condition in our dogs.
Most of the canine illnesses occur due to putrefaction in the colon. As years progress, the colon develops rings of fecal waste. The fecal waste solidifies in the colon and this impairs the peristalsis in the body of the dog. The wave like motion used by the digestive system to push the food from one end of the body to another end gets impaired due to the fecal waste. The accumulation of the rings of fecal matter can be compared to the accumulation of rings in the trees. The older the tree, more are the number of rings. Older the dog, more are the number of rings of fecal matter in the intestine of the dog.
Impairment of peristalsis leads to a vicious cycle where fecal matter accumulation impairs peristalsis and the impairment of peristalsis leads to more accumulation of the fecal matter. This cycle increases the presence of bacteria in the colon. Absorption of nutrients through the wall of the intestines stops. The flexure that pushes the food from the small to the large intestine gets covered in fecal matter and jams. Needless to say, the health of the dog suffers due to this.
It has been noticed that dogs rarely suffer from cavities. It has been speculated that the lack of cavities may be due to the fact that the enamel surface of the teeth of the dog is harder and more immune to cavities. Another possible factor is the fact that the digestion of starch in dogs begins in the intestinal tract while it begins in the mouth of the humans. The fact that amylase is not present in the saliva of the dogs but is present in the saliva of the humans may be one reason.
