Just as in humans, health issue come up in dogs as they age. Let's take a look at some top issues dogs face as they grow older.
First, bad breath occurs in a dog due to a constipated digestive system. Such a digestive system locks the putrefying toxic wastes in the body of the dog and the stench is emitted from the mouth. Bad breath occurs due to a diet consisting of dead, refined food having no raw, live food or fiber.
Just because a dog has a daily bowel movement does not mean that the dog is not constipated. All dogs suffer from constipation at some point of time in their life. There are very few exceptions to this rule. However, very few owners ever get to know that their dog is constipated. The best way to get rid of bad breath is to give the dog a mix of rosemary leaves and flowers or lemon juice and water or apple juice or raw honey and water. It is advisable to make the dog fast for a few days to get rid of the immediate problem. To prevent recurrence, make the dog fast for at least one day of the week. Feed it nothing but distilled water and raw honey on that day. Use lots of raw fruits and vegetables, yogurt and raw or slightly braised meat. These changes should solve the problem bad breath.
Aged dogs are found to face the problem of slow loss of hair due to ill health. To solve this problem, feed the dog a diet of raw meats, vegetables and fruits. Feed brewers' yeast, kelp, desiccated liver, raw corn, olive, peanut or safflower oil to provide the dog with unsaturated fatty acids. Bathe the balding areas with rosemary leaves, marigold flowers or daffodil leaves. You can try massaging castor oil or eucalyptus oil as well.
Unspayed female dogs often face the problem of breast tumors. These occur due to hormonal imbalances and changes. If the dog is facing the problem of toxemia and ill health, the chances of breast tumor increases. It may also be connected with the estrogen in the body. It is important to remember that a tumor is an attempt by the body to isolate a harmful condition. A tumor is usually benign in some of its areas and malignant in other areas. You must keep in mind that a biopsy can aggravate the malignant portion and cause the tumor to spread even more rapidly.
A tumor is a message from the body that something is not right. Simply removing the tumor is not the solution. You must focus on removing the tumor as well as the cause of the tumor. It is very essential to remove the toxicity. This can be done by enriching the diet with live, raw foods which will ensure the supply of vital enzymes to the body. You can also opt for enzyme therapy along with the raw foods. You can also use herbal therapies to rectify the problem.
The general theory about cancer is that it is caused by faulty protein metabolism. A shift to raw, live food diet will give the body the opportunity to rectify the fault. The shift will clean up the blood stream and this will enhance the overall health of the body.

As your dog grows older, he should be fed only a proper and well balanced diet. The importance of the quality of the diet increases as the dog grows older. Each and every degenerative disease that aged dogs suffer is the result of deficiency in nutrition and poor absorption of nutrition.
There is consensus amongst authorities that aged dogs require additional vitamins and mineral supplements. They should be given lesser quantity of higher quality food. As the owner of a dog, it is your duty to identify symptoms of degenerative disease and correlate them with non-fulfillment of the nutrition requirements of the dog. The dog has no concern about its nutritional requirements. It does not care whether they have been fulfilled or not. A young dog can manage the lacunae in his diet. However, as the dog grows older, the lacunae result in illnesses.
Most of the experts agree that there is essentially only one canine disease- toxemia. This condition refers to the presence of waste in the cells of the dog. The waste causes the cells to either malfunction or cease to function. This condition may be given different names. However, the disease is essentially the same. The dog suffers this disease only because we feed the wrong foods. We are responsible for the presence of this condition in our dogs.
Most of the canine illnesses occur due to putrefaction in the colon. As years progress, the colon develops rings of fecal waste. The fecal waste solidifies in the colon and this impairs the peristalsis in the body of the dog. The wave like motion used by the digestive system to push the food from one end of the body to another end gets impaired due to the fecal waste. The accumulation of the rings of fecal matter can be compared to the accumulation of rings in the trees. The older the tree, more are the number of rings. Older the dog, more are the number of rings of fecal matter in the intestine of the dog.
Impairment of peristalsis leads to a vicious cycle where fecal matter accumulation impairs peristalsis and the impairment of peristalsis leads to more accumulation of the fecal matter. This cycle increases the presence of bacteria in the colon. Absorption of nutrients through the wall of the intestines stops. The flexure that pushes the food from the small to the large intestine gets covered in fecal matter and jams. Needless to say, the health of the dog suffers due to this.
It has been noticed that dogs rarely suffer from cavities. It has been speculated that the lack of cavities may be due to the fact that the enamel surface of the teeth of the dog is harder and more immune to cavities. Another possible factor is the fact that the digestion of starch in dogs begins in the intestinal tract while it begins in the mouth of the humans. The fact that amylase is not present in the saliva of the dogs but is present in the saliva of the humans may be one reason.

A properly balanced diet is something that you should always strive to feed your dog, but it becomes increasingly more critical the older your dog gets. This quality of that diet also increases as the dog gets older. The suffering that besets older dogs where each and every degenerative affliction is concerned is usually a direct result of either or both of the following aspects:

• deficiency of nutrients • poor nutritional absorption

There is a consensus among pet authorities as well as veterinarians that additional mineral supplements and vitamins are required as your dog gets older, as well as being fed less of the higher quality pet foods and snacks. Just remember that it is your responsibility as the dog's owner to identify any symptoms of degenerative diseases and see if there is a correlation between the condition and nutritional intake.

Younger dogs have the capability of managing the "lacunae" - small cavities or pits in any anatomical structure - in their diet. However, these lacunae oftentimes breed illnesses in an older dog. Toxemia is a disease that canines are subject to and this basically results when waste becomes present in the dog's body cells. The cells will either malfunction or cease to function altogether whenever waste is present. Whenever a dog suffers from this condition it is usually because we are not feeding them the proper foods, so it is our responsibility as owners to prevent this from happening.

Putrefaction in the colon is the primary cause of most canine ailments and as a dog ages, the colon begins to develop fecal waste rings. Fecal matter will solidify within the dog's colon and the animal's peristalsis (a wave like motion used by the digestive tract to push the food through the system) becomes impaired because of the build-up of fecal matter. Fecal matter rings are likened to tree rings in that they accumulate over time. The older the tree is, the more rings it will have. So to is the case with these fecal matter rings in dogs.

When the dog's peristalsis gets impaired it starts a vicious cycle in that the process is impaired by the accumulation of fecal matter and the impairment of peristalsis results in further accumulation of this fecal matter. Additionally, there is a marked increase in the amount of bacteria present in the colon, and nutrients stop being absorbed through the intestinal walls. The flexure responsible for moving the food from the smaller intestine into the larger one becomes covered with this fecal matter and causes the flexure to jam and stop functioning properly. As a result, your dog's health will decline.

On a side note, but somewhat related to proper digestion of nutrition, it has been documented that dogs' teeth rarely develop cavities because of a harder enamel surface. It has been speculated that the digestion of starches in the dog's diet doesn't begin until it reaches the intestinal tract, whereas it begins in the mouths of humans. This is due to the presence of amylase, an enzyme in human saliva (but not canine) that breaks down starch into sugar.

Just as it is the case with human beings, the older a dog gets, the more prone they become to a variety of health conditions and problems that are associated with the aging process. The following content presents some of the issues that you can be faced with as the owner of an aging or older dog.One of the more common maladies is bad breath, which results when the dog's digestive system has become constipated. When the digestive system becomes constipated, it traps putrefying waste (which are toxic) in the dog's body. When this occurs, the digestive stench is expelled when the dog exhales. If a dog has been subjected to a diet consisting of dead and/or refined foods, and has not been fed fiber or live, raw food, the problem will oftentimes result.A dog can still have a constipated digestive system even thought they are having regular bowel movements, and at some time in their lives all dogs may suffer from this. With few exceptions this is just part of a dog's nature and most owners never have a clue that this is occurring. There are numerous remedies that you can give your dog to correct this but the most common are the following:• rosemary leaves and flowers• lemon juice mixed with either apple juice or water• raw honey and waterFasting for a few days can also help rectify the problem although the dog won't like that idea very much. From a preventative standpoint, a single day of fasting during the week will stave off any recurrences of the problem as well. You can calm the dog's hunger pangs by feeding them distilled water with raw honey mixed in on the day of the fast. Another recommendation is that you feed the dog any of the following foods:Older dogs in failing or ill health are also prone to the slow loss of hair. Typically, the solution is to add (or increase the intake of) fruits, raw meats, and vegetables in the dog's daily diet. In order to provide the dog with unsaturated fatty acids, include the following in their diet as well:• Brewer's yeast• desiccated liver• kelp• olive• peanut or safflower oil• raw cornOther remedies include either bathing the affected areas with daffodil leaves, marigold flowers, or rosemary leaves, or massaging castor oil or eucalyptus oil into those balding patches. When an unsprayed female gets up in years, breast tumors oftentimes become a serious problem, stemming from changes or imbalances in hormone levels. The probability of breast tumors developing is increased if the dog is in ill health or is having toxemia issues. It can also be associated with estrogen levels in the body as well. What the owner needs to realize is that the growth or onset of a tumor is the body's way of trying to isolate a condition that is harmful to the overall health of the organism.Tumors can also be benign in some areas and malignant in others. Aggravation and rapid spreading of the malignancy throughout the body can also occur should the tumor be biopsied, so the procedure is only done when it is absolutely necessary. Since the onset of a tumor is a warning sign that something is apparently wrong in the dog's system, simply removing it does not always remove the health risk and eliminate the problem. You need to focus on the cause or source of the tumor as well as removing it.
