Just picking up some ordinary vitamins at the drugstore is not enough for a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins contain important nutrients in stronger dosages than regular multivitamin supplements (even those formulated for women). Here is a look at what prenatal vitamins should contain and the benefit of each ingredient for new mother.
Prenatal Vitamin Ingredients
Folic Acid
Folic acid is the most commonly prescribed prenatal supplement for the months prior to becoming pregnant and, once pregnant, it is essential for the health and growth of the baby, especially for brain functions.
The March of Dimes reports that birth defects of the spine, skull, and brain, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are more likely to occur if the mother does not get sufficient folic acid during the first few weeks of her pregnancy - even before she knows she is pregnant.
Calcium
Calcium supplementation is so important during pregnancy. A good prenatal vitamin should include calcium, which is necessary for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Low dietary intake of calcium is associated with increased risk of preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced hypertension, urine protein loss and swelling around the ankles).
In the last trimester of pregnancy, skeletal growth is highest and the fetus draws calcium directly from the mother's stores. In addition, clinical trials have shown that adequate calcium during pregnancy lowers blood pressure and may reduce the incidence of premature births.
Magnesium
Magnesium promotes the health of bones and may help maintain normal blood pressure and muscle comfort during pregnancy. Magnesium promotes the health of bones (64% of the body's magnesium is concentrated in the bones). It supports normal bone structure and plays an essential role in more than 300 cellular reactions.
Iron
Iron is recommended to prevent the mother suffering from anemia due to the demands that the baby puts on her iron consumption. Iron is an important mineral and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby's blood to carry oxygen. Iron deficiencies can lead to severe birth defects for the baby.
Vitamin A
Adequate amounts of vitamin A help to promote the health of the baby by promoting normal growth and development of the embryo and fetus, and supporting genes that determine the sequential development of organs in embryonic development. Beta-carotene is a nutrient from plants that the body converts into vitamin A.
Vitamin C
The female body's requirement for vitamin C increases during pregnancy as this vitamin promotes the normal growth of the baby and supports building strong bones and teeth. Vitamin C promotes normal tissue repair and healing. It also supports the absorption of another key nutrient during pregnancy: iron.
Vitamin D
New research from the Boston University School of Medicine is recommending higher intakes of vitamin D as so many are deficient. The women's levels of vitamin D were related to the frequency of milk consumption and prenatal vitamin use.
B-Vitamins
Increased vitamin B6 levels can boost immunities needed after pregnancy and sufficient B6 has been shown to provide infant growth advantages. This B- vitamin can prevent neural tube defects when taken early in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.
B1 and B2 are water-soluble vitamins that support the body's ability to process carbohydrates, fat, and protein. This helps with the energy requirements and production increase in pregnancy.
Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin B5, is a water-soluble vitamin that helps to regulate your body's adrenal activity and antibody production. If you are pregnant and don't get enough B5, your baby's growth may be slowed.
Vitamin B6 is the master vitamin for processing amino acids - the building blocks of all proteins and some hormones, which is vital to your fetus's developing brain and nervous system.
Vitamin B12 (consumed during pregnancy) promotes the health and normal nerve function of the baby.
Biotin
Women have an increased requirement for biotin during pregnancy, and a biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50 percent of pregnant women. This deficiency may increase the risk of birth defects. The fetus pulls so much of the nutrients from the mother's diet; therefore, it is important that she consumes enough biotin.
Zinc
Increased zinc levels can boost immunities needed after pregnancy. Zinc supports normal growth and development during pregnancy. Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes that support normal healing, fertility in adults and growth in children, protein synthesis, cell reproduction, vision, immune function, and protection against free radicals, among other functions.
Prenatal vitamins can be taken after pregnancy to provide a well-balanced supplementation program. With a mother's hectic schedule and lack of time, prenatal vitamins are a perfect choice for an after pregnancy supplement regimen.
The correct prenatal vitamins are essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Doing your research on prenatal vitamins can be very rewarding and time well spent to ensure an easy and successful pregnancy. Researchers at the University of Maryland have noticed that many commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins do not dissolve well resulting in insufficient absorption of the nutrients.

Drugs can damage the development of a baby, and can cause complications during pregnancy. Certain drugs can cause nutritional deficiencies, anemia, and fetal growth retardation. The use of drugs while pregnant can also increase the chance of developing toxemia or pre-eclampsia. Marijuana use during pregnancy can cause attention deficit, memory problems and impaired decision making skills. These problems usually don’t appear until age 3. The use of amphetamines is associated with an increase in cardiovascular defects in babies. Barbiturate use during pregnancy may be linked to birth defects, withdrawals, poor feeding, and seizures. Opiods are associated with abnormalities and complications during pregnancy. There is a high risk for premature labor, intrauterine growth retardation and pre-eclampsia, in women who use opiods while pregnant. Cocaine use by the mother-to-be can increase the risk of miscarriage. Babies born to mothers who used cocaine during pregnancy can have lower IQ scores and mental deficiencies. Sudden infant death syndrome is more common in babies born to mothers who used cocaine. The use of PCP during pregnancy is believed to cause abnormal development in babies. It can cause the mother to have mental illness and loose contact with reality.

If you smoke cigarettes, and are pregnant or plan to be pregnant you should definitely consider stopping the habit. When you inhale tobacco smoke you are inhaling substances that are harmful to you and your growing baby. These substances include nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, tars, resins and other cancer causing agents. These harmful chemicals are passed through the placenta to the baby when inhaled by the mother to be.

Smoking has a number of harmful effects on babies such as, a low birth weight, lower IQ scores, reading disorders, and hyperactivity. Smoking has also been known to interfere with the baby’s absorption of vitamins B and C and folic acid, which are all important to the growth and development of the baby. There is a risk of developing placental abruption during pregnancy that increases to 25% in women who are moderate smokers, and 65% in women who smoke heavily. Smoking during pregnancy also increases the risk of miscarriage, death of the baby while still in the mother, or shortly after birth. The risk of placenta previa is 25% more likely to happen in women who smoke moderately, and 90% more likely in women who smoke heavily.

Drinking alcohol while pregnant is also not a good idea. There are very serious risks involved with drinking alcohol and being pregnant. Even a little amount of alcohol can increase the risk of having a miscarriage. Large amounts of alcohol can result in abnormalities of the baby. Chronic alcohol use can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, FAS, which is when the fetus develops abnormally.

Fetal alcohol syndrome refers to growth retardation before and after the child’s birth. This can mean heart and limb defects and unusual facial characteristics. Children born with FAS can also have behavioral problems, impaired speech, and impaired muscle and joint use.

Abnormalities in babies have been associated with as little as two drinks a day. It is best to avoid alcohol altogether, so that you do not put your baby at risk of having fetal alcohol syndrome. Some over the counter cold medicines contain alcohol, so make sure to read labels before use of all medications.

Not only does the mother need to avoid alcohol, but it is also a good idea for the father to not drink also. Research suggests that large amounts of alcohol consumed by the father may cause the baby to be born with FAS. Alcohol consumption by the father has also been known to cause intrauterine growth retardation.

Not only can illegal drugs have harmful effects on babies, but legal drugs and medications can have harmful effects on babies also. You should stop all use of medications until you discuss the medicines with your doctor to find out if they are safe to use while pregnant. The best way to prevent any of these harmful effects on your baby is to stop all drug use before and during pregnancy. The next time you consider getting “high”, having a drink, or lighting up, think of how it would feel if your baby is born with abnormalities, and you single handedly could have prevented these hardships for your baby.

Quite many pains and aches accompany you as you get pregnant. Earlier, most doctors ended the matter aside saying they were a part of pregnancy. However now, doctors suggest a well balanced diet to sort this matter. A few pregnancy ailments which a good diet would help are mentioned below.
1. Gums and Tooth problem
This is one common ailment during the pregnancy tenure. To help keep yours and the baby's teeth healthy, you need to ensure the right intake for Vitamin C and Calcium. You could chew some cheese and nuts or keep sugarless gum with you to cater this requirement.
2. Eat healthy and be hydrated
Most women feel lightheaded and dizzy during pregnancy, especially when no food intake occurs. This seems to be quite common. This makes it very important to eat all through the day and also keep snacking regularly. Snacks need to be healthy and one should stay away from the junk stuff as much as possible. The junk stuff provides immediate rush in energy levels, but subsequently leaves you with a worse feeling than what you did before having them. It is very essential to keep the body well hydrated. Drinking and snacking would boost the blood sugar by keeping you well hydrated. You could fight dizziness when the hydration is ample.
3. Leg cramps
In the second trimester, one may wake up in the middle of the night getting into leg cramps. When you lack enough calcium content in your body, leg cramps become apparent. Some say that lack in magnesium levels often result in leg cramps while others blame dehydration for the same. In anyway, you need to ensure ample supply of calcium and magnesium to avoid this. You could as well take a piece of cheese or a glass of milk before turning to sleep so that you get rid of leg cramps. Ascertain to take a minimum of eight glasses of water so that you remain well hydrated.
4. Swellings
This is another instance of a pain in pregnancy. A small amount of swelling is healthy and normal during the pregnancy tenure; however, severe cases could be signs of preeclampsia. Approximately 75 % of pregnant women experience swellings of some sort. Excess water retention is the common cause for this. Drinking good amount of water and avoiding salty food would help in minimizing the swelling effect.
5. Skin
Your skin might appear to be in a situation similar to that of a teenager who is ready to hit puberty. A few of them face the dry skin problem which is easily cured by drinking plenty of water and other fluids to keep up the moisture levels. In cases of flakey skin, you could eat nuts and seeds and more of omega-3 rich foods. Some women suffer from blotchiness and skin discoloration which is often a result of deficiency of folic acid. Prenatal vitamin comes handy in these circumstances.
6. Hair intact
Women, sometimes, are blessed with no hair fall all through the pregnancy tenure as some hormones make sure that the hair fall is less compared to what is usual. Quite few of them feel that the hair is much less than stellar when they are pregnant. This is often due to less supply of vitamins. Vitamins A, B and C is essential all through the pregnancy. Healthy hair and scalp is a result of ample Vitamin A. Vitamin B would assist in hair growth and the strength needed comes from Vitamin C. Every woman should ensure that she gets all three Vitamins in the right proportion.
Pregnancy is, but the most significant time for eating healthy. This could turn out to be the best gift for any baby-to-be. Your healthy food intake would ensure a healthy pregnancy avoiding all uncomfortable aspects of the tenure.

Pregnancy risks are one of the many things; a woman should be concerned about, once she knows that her baby is on the way. The quality of medical care and awareness of behavioral risk factors has drastically reduced pregnancy related complications today. Yet, it is important that that every woman going through a period of pregnancy is aware of certain things related to her pregnancy week by week.
Pregnancy Risk Factors
Undesirable lifestyles, genetic background, and existing medical conditions are some of the main factors that contribute toward high-risk pregnancy.
How Is Your Lifestyle?
Unhealthful lifestyles before or during pregnancy adds to pregnancy risks. This can negatively affect the long-term health of the mother and newborn child. A would be mother should keep the following points in mind.
1. Quit substance use-Alcohol, drugs and cigarettes harm the developing fetus. Consume coffee and tea in moderation.
2. Learn the importance of nutrition-Avoid certain foods that may harm the unborn baby. Some of these are certain kinds of fish that contain mercury, raw meats and unpasteurized milk that can contain harmful bacteria called Listeria. Eat a balanced diet that contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and minerals.
3. Avoid stress and anxiety-Statistical studies have shown that expectant mothers who are distraught by anxiety, fear, and emotional turmoil are more prone to conditions like pregnancy-induced hypertension. This condition is also called Toxemia or Preeclampsia.
4. Exercise in moderation-Vigorous and strenuous physical activity can contribute to pregnancy risks. Consult your doctor for prenatal exercise tips. Moderate walking and light housework are helpful pregnancy exercises.
5. Avoid sex during pregnancy, if your doctor or pregnancy health care provider detects certain significant complications with your pregnancy.
Other Pregnancy Risks
Certain aspects of genetic background and existing medical conditions may add to pregnancy risks. These are:
1. Family history of genetic diseases or birth defects
2. Previous history of pregnancy loss
3. Pre-existing medical conditions, like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease etc.
4. Age factor such as, getting pregnant before the age of 18 or after 35
5. Chronic anemia
If any of these or other factors hold true for you, it is important to consult your doctor at once.
Seek Support
It is good to keep in mind that pregnancy risks are an unpleasant fact. However have a positive approach towards life. Seek guidance from your doctor and persons close to you. Your husband, for instance can provide great emotional support. All these will go a long way in dispelling fear of pregnancy or labor. Keep in mind that you as a woman is endowed with God greatest gift -that of giving birth to another human being.

Thanks to The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council new U.S. weight-gain guidelines for obese pregnant women were released and according to them "eating for two" is no longer advisable. The old myth is that gaining weight (25 - 35 lbs) during pregnancy can reduce the risks of a miscarriage. Doctors and health-care providers have been following these guidelines issued by the ACOG (American College of Obstetricians) to all pregnant patients. The new guidelines stem from growing evidence linking weight gain before and after pregnancy to a number of health problems for both mother and baby. Overweight and obese women are at a higher risk of several health complications such as preeclampsia, hypertension, gestational diabetes, Cesarean Section and postpartum infections and also put their babies at risk of birth defects and childhood obesity. Specialists think that the new guidelines were necessary in order to change weight patterns among American women, considering the fact that two-thirds of U.S. women of reproductive age are obese. Women should be aware that gaining weight during pregnancy contributes to obesity, elevates risks of heart disease and stroke and it makes it that much harder for overweight women to return to their normal weight after pregnancy. For decades, we thought that in order to make sure that women were healthy, they needed to be round and chubby when pregnant, this idea has changed and the new guidelines recommend a specific and relatively narrow range of gain for obese women and they are formulated as a range of weight gain for each category of prepregnancy BMI. New recommendations for total and rate of weight gain during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy BMI. Prepregnancy BMI / BMI+ (kg/m2) / Total Weight Gain Range (lbs) Underweight / Less than 18.5 / 28-40 Normal Weight / 18.5-24.9 / 25-35 Overweight / 25-30 / 15-25 Obese / Greater than 30 / 11-20 It is important that women use these guidelines in concert with their health care providers' judgment. And they receive preconception counseling that includes their weight, height, physical activity and access to contraception for overweight or obese women who decide to use birth control as they move toward a healthier weight. Women should not only be within a normal BMI range when they conceive but also should gain within the ranges recommended in the new guidelines. In the past, a 5-foot-5 woman who started pregnancy at 180 pounds would have been urged to finish her pregnancy at 195 to 205 pounds. Under the new guidelines, her recommended weight at delivery would be 191 to 200 pounds. We understand that it might be a challenge especially for obese women not to gain too much weight during pregnant, but it is extremely important in order to reduce the risks and to improve maternal and child health outcomes. Little is know about teenagers who are pregnant, but it is advisable that they use the adult BMI categories to determine their weight gain range until more research is done to determine whether special categories are needed for them. For instance, although these new guidelines are not too different from the ones in 1990, it is important that women in childbearing age take knowledge of them and implement them to assure a healthy, risk free pregnancy. In the meantime further studies should be conducted on how dietary intake, physical activity, and other factors affect weight gain during pregnancy in diverse populations.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, some of the same discomforts your spouse had in your second trimester will continue. Plus, many women find breathing even more difficult and notice they have to go to the bathroom even more often. This is because the baby is getting bigger and it is putting more pressure on her organs. Don't worry, your baby is fine and these problems will lessen once your spouse gives birth. The following aches and pains often appear for the first time during the third trimester:

As your spouse near her due date, her cervix becomes thinner and softer (called effacing). This is a normal, natural process that helps the birth canal (vagina) to open during the birthing process. Your doctor can check your spouse’s progress with a vaginal exam.Weight Gain According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, everyone gains weight at different rates. On average, it is normal to gain about one pound per week, or three to four pounds per month, during the third trimester. By the end of the pregnancy your spouse should have gained, on average, about 25 to 30 pounds. About 7 1/2 pounds of that weight should be the baby.

The best and simplest pregnancy nutrition advice is to maintain a well-balanced diet. Your unborn child depends on you to provide all its vitamins and minerals to ensure that it is born healthy. Adequate nutrition is vital in promoting normal organ development and growth. Good nutrition helps in building a strong immune system to fight infection, and helps to minimise the risks of developing certain diseases. When pregnant, a womans body demands an increase in daily nutrition and in order to ensure a healthy baby, it is important that this is recognised and maintained.

Good nutrition plays crucial roles in promoting normal organ development and functioning, growth, and maintenance. It builds a strong immune system to resist infection and minimize the risks for developing certain illnesses and helps the body cope with injuries. While pregnancy is a normal occurrence for a female body, it demands an increase to the daily nutritional allowances. Hence, the importance of maintaining ideal pregnancy nutrition is emphasized.

Every day pregnant women need to have a high-quality diet which is usually translated to 80 to 100 grams of protein, a little bit of salt, lots of water or fluids, and calories from foods obtained from a variety of whole food sources. In this regard, the food pyramid serves to be a useful pregnancy nutrition advice guide.

A womans body increases in size by 40 to 60 percent during pregnancy. With such increase comes the concern for the maintenance of proper pregnancy nutrition. By taking adequate levels of protein, salt, water, essential vitamins and minerals, this helps to reduce the risk of suffering preeclampsia. Sufficient intake of folic acid or B vitamins prevents neural tube birth defects on the baby, such as spina-bifida. Hence, both mother and baby benefit from proper nutrition as it ensures normal foetal growth and development, and healthy placenta and amniotic fluid.

The main consequences of poor pregnancy nutrition are an increased risk of disorders, and mortality. It makes the foetus more susceptible to degenerative diseases and cognitive or neural disorders. Certain precursory studies have proved that there is a link between pregnancy nutrition and foetal development, as well as the mothers health. Babies that are cared for by mothers that practise good pregnancy nutrition are known to have less restriction in the womb.

Living up to your doctor's pregnancy nutrition advice is also important in ensuring well-being as you make it to your full term. Since proper nutrition helps maintain balance to the hormonal and other bodily changes in a woman's body, it helps dampen the instances of mood swings, depression and other behavioural concerns related to pregnancy.

Eating the right balance of foods enhances and optimizes the benefits of relaxation. It also gives provides an expectant mum with more energy to move around and still do most of her normal activities while carrying the added weight of the baby. Given these benefits there is an increased possibility of a straightforward birth.

Actually, the benefits of a well-balanced diet must be established even before the pregnancy begins. To women who plan on getting pregnant, following the pregnancy nutrition advice not only ensures excellent health for conception, it also increases your chances of conceiving. The good news is that valuable pregnancy nutrition tips are available from a number of sources. Aside from shopping for baby clothes, these materials make wise investments for they will guide you on the things you need to know to take care of your baby.

Prenatal vitamins are an important part of a woman's health regimen when she is pregnant; a woman's health needs and nutritional requirements change dramatically when she becomes pregnant. Vitamins for pregnant women are specifically designed to help women to meet the new nutritional demands that an unborn fetus places on the body. Generally, the obstetrician will offer a pregnant female a prescription for prenatal vitamins on her first visit to the office: the prescription should be filled with immediacy and used throughout the nine months of pregnancy. When a female is pregnant her need for folic acid doubles: a lack of folic acid in a pregnant female can actually result in certain birth defects. Prenatal vitamins can increase the amounts of folic acid that a female receives during pregnancy to help to prevent potential birth defects, to encourage the healthy formation of cells in the body, and to further encourage the formation of healthy DNA structures. To ensure the healthiest weight for the unborn baby, women need to also increase their Vitamin B3 intake via prenatal vitamins. Vitamins for pregnant women are designed to offer B3 vitamins that have been associated with ensuring an adequate length and weight of the baby. Vitamin B3 intake is also needed to prevent future conditions like Osteoarthritis, and has been linked to the delay of gestational diabetes: a disorder prevalent in pregnant females. Prenatal vitamins also supply a pregnant women with much needed calcium; calcium in pregnant women can help diminish the risk of getting preeclampsia, it can lower the possibility of experiencing leg cramps, and it can also lower a female's risk for having a premature baby. In addition, prenatal vitamins for pregnant women offer a female plenty of iron. When a woman is pregnant the body demands more iron intake: getting iron via prenatal vitamin supplements ensures that a women does not become anemic during her pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins also offer women the right amounts of magnesium, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K too. Basically, the pills are used to supplement a healthy diet so that the pregnant female is always getting all of the nutrition that she needs as she carries the unborn child to term. Prenatal vitamins are generally consumed one time daily and offer a female all of the vitamins and trace minerals needed to ensure the female's health as well as the health of the unborn fetus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning that pregnant women are at higher risk for life-threatening complications from the Swine Flu. Six of thirty-four U.S. pregnant women with confirmed swine flu contracted pneumonia and died. These women were healthy before contracting the flu. Compared to the general population pregnant women have a four fold risk for getting the flu.

No doubt pregnant women will be the target of an experimental vaccine campaign, as well as the CDC-recommended aggressive use of antiviral drugs. Many women are reluctant to take such risks for their unborn child. The CDC is arguing that the risks to them outweigh any risks to the child. This will be a tough decision for many pregnant women.

The reason pregnancy is a risk is because a mother’s immune system is down-regulated during that time so as not to reject the fetus. This needed lessening of immune function also reduces anti-viral activity.

This is complicated by metabolic problems during pregnancy, such as higher blood sugar, higher blood pressure, or toxemia – all problems driven by improper leptin function. These problems create energy inefficiency which further handicaps immunity. Stress or simply doing too much also contribute to energy inefficiency.

Any pregnant woman should practice good hygiene, stay away from situations where she is likely to come into contact with sick people, and as a priority maintain a good energy level.

Your immune system needs energy to function properly and is certainly capable of doing this during pregnancy. The combination of pregnancy and fatigue is what sets a person up for problems.
